When it comes to what attracts most people to Florida, Martin County offers its visitors and residents a like some of the finest beaches on the east coast. You can enjoy outstanding waterfront views while walking on the beach or hunting for shells. It’s easy to enjoy the waves, windsurfing or watch for large, lumbering sea turtles crawling ashore to lay their eggs. Kick off your shoes and let the sand sift between your toes, or wet a line for some of the best surf, sun and fishing in the state.
Martin County's natural resources really begin at its coastline and we offer some of the best fishing in the world. Since the 1930's, visitors from around all over have journeyed to Martin County to fish our abundant offshore and inshore waters. The uniqueness of our geographical location combined with the influence of the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River, contributes to the huge diversity of game fish found in our area.Your adventure of a day could be offshore fishing for marlin, dolphin, sailfish or Wahoo, to the spectacular bass fishing on Martin County's western border of Lake Okeechobee, to the wide array of inshore fishing opportunities, there is literally something for every style of fishing enthusiast.
Culture and The Arts
Martin County also has a great deal of culture, so if your not into fishing or watersports you will find an abundance of other venues to choose from. There are several organizations in Martin County providing cultural opportunities. The Arts Council, Inc. was formed as an umbrella organization designed to bring the arts groups together and coordinate many of the activities. .
The Council sponsors an annual Artsfest which provides an opportunity for residents to enjoy beautiful artwork, community theater, several contemporary dance companies, literature readings, a folk music series, art leagues and professional entertainment contribute to the cultural activities.
The Center for Arts was created for families and individuals of all ages to come together to enjoy experiences of creative expression and to pursue instruction in art forms that suit their dreams and goals. These include dance, theater, music, art, pottery, martial arts, healing arts and parenting.
The downtown area of Stuart has a beautiful theater where you can enjoy a variety of shows. The Lyric Theater was built in 1925 operated as a silent movie house until depression, when it was closed and eventually sold. In 1987 a downtown redevelopment effort got underway and a group of community minded individuals saw Lyric Theater, situated in the heart of downtown Stuart, and realized there was an opportunity to save a historically significant structure.
Since that time, the Lyric Theater has hosted a variety of events ranging from classical theater to rock and country bands, orchestra and jazz concerts, dance recitals and school programs and has presented nationally known performers..
Other Theaters/Attractions located in Stuart and Martin County are: The Barn Theater, The Children’s Museum, Elliott Museum and The House of Refuge.
